Driveway Retaining Wall & Hillside Steps

This homeowner wanted to replace a super old, broken-down retaining wall along the side of their driveway that was failing and spilling loose dirt and rocks all over the place. The goal was to stabilize the hillside, clean up the driveway edge, and build safe, direct access up the slope to the backyard behind it.

Scope of work - We demolished and hauled away the existing deteriorated wall, cleared out the loose soil and scattered rock, and regraded the slope for structural stability. From there, we installed a durable new retaining wall along the driveway, backfilled with clean gravel and drainage pipe to manage runoff, and built integrated stone steps leading from the driveway up the hill directly into the backyard.

Key considerations - The main priorities were managing water and soil pressure behind the wall to ensure it stands the test of time, while calculating a safe, comfortable rise for the steps so the climb to the backyard feels effortless. We also focused on choosing clean, durable materials that complement the home and significantly upgrade the driveway’s curb appeal.

Results - Overall we and the homeowner were very happy with the result. Their new retaining wall and steps will remain a staple alongside their driveway and backyard for many years to come.
